SECONDARY COUNSELLOR

1. DESCRIPTION OF SCHOOL LEVEL DELIVERY MODEL

The Secondary school counsellor will:

a) provide personal/social counselling to students;

b) provide direct service to students' families;

c) act as advocate on behalf of students and their families;

d) provide educational counselling;

e) provide career/vocational counselling;

f) participate as a member of the school-based team and/or learner support team;

g) facilitate instruction to students in peer helping, conflict resolution, leadership, social skills and life skills;

h) provide support to other educators teaching Career and Personal Planning and in promoting healthy school environments;

i) act as liaison with community agencies;

j) be familiar with the Inclusive Education Manual of Policies, Procedures and Guidelines;

k) be knowledgeable about reporting procedures for Child Abuse and Drug Abuse;

l) be knowledgeable about reporting issues related to suicidal ideation;

m) liaise with associate elementary schools to facilitate successful student transition to secondary setting;

n) is knowledgeable of future changes in graduation requirements to facilitate appropriate decision making for students in course and program selection.        

2. MINIMUM ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

a) valid B. C. Teaching Certificate;

b) minimum of two years satisfactory teaching experience;

c) Master's degree in Counselling/Psychology equivalent to M.A. or M.Ed Counselling Psychology from Simon Fraser University or University of British Columbia, including a practicum in a school setting equivalent to:

The practicum affords opportunities for the student counsellor to engage in direct counselling and counselling-related activities for a minimum of 120 hours, including at least 50 hours of direct client contact and l hour per week of direct supervision

3. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

a) previous counselling experience at the secondary school level.

4. REPORTING STRUCTURE

The personnel in this position are accountable in the execution of their assigned duties to the school principal.
